Evonik’s support to the “Green Campus” project

The importance of sustainability and environmental protection efforts is increasing every day, and the “Green Campus” project launched by Istanbul Technical University constitutes a great example in this regard. Established in 1773 and known as one of the world’s three oldest technical universities, Istanbul Technical University has developed this project to decrease the use of motor vehicles and facilitate access in the campus for approximately 38 thousand registered students as the university is established on a very large area. Within the scope of the project, a six-kilometer bike lane was created and Evonik sponsored one kilometer of this lane.

The DEGAROUTE® based two-component system was applied on the part of the lane sponsored by Evonik. A base layer with anti-skid aggregate was applied, followed by a top coat. An anti-skid surface was developed with this special spray application, which was used for the first time in Turkey, to make the bike lane as safe as possible. A total of four metric tons of materials were used to treat the approximately 2,600 square meters of bike lane, and the treatment was completed in just three days.

The rapidly processes two-component system is based on DEGAROUTE® reactive resins and can be used for a variety of applications including flat line, structured and profile markings. Since the material adheres very well to concrete and asphalt, even thin layers are highly durable.

The “Green Campus” project, which consists of barrier-free roads and pavements, pervious concrete surfaces, environmental-friendly buildings and the new bike lane, aims to make the large campus area of Istanbul Technical University more appealing to bikers and pedestrians, and to raise environmental awareness of students.
