Castrol’s carbon-neutral engine oil is awarded by Turkish Ministry

Castrol was awarded for its work in the field of sustainability at the ‘Our Energy is Our Future Awards’, held at the 4th Turkey Energy and Natural Resources Summit on 7 June 2021, with its products that have the distinction of being the “world’s first carbon-neutral engine oil.”

The second ‘Our Energy is Our Future Awards’ was held with the main theme ‘Sustainable Energy’ this year. Castrol participated in this award program with its ‘world’s first carbon-neutral engine oil’ products, which are in its portfolio since 2014, and was awarded for its works in this field. Applications for the award program in which energy companies participate with sustainability-themed projects they have realized in the last three years, were evaluated in terms of their area of influence, the benefits they provide and the reflections for the future. Projects, evaluated by a jury consisting of officials from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, competed in the fields of climate change and environment, sustainable finance, digitalization and innovation, energy efficiency, investment and social benefit.

At the awards ceremony, bp Turkey Country President Tümkan Işıltan received the award from Mr. Fatih Dönmez, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey. Işıltan pointed out the importance of Castrol’s sustainability works for the future, revealing bp’s technology-based innovative approach in the field of lubricants. “In a period where we increase our investments and take firm steps toward our emission reduction goal, this award we received with Castrol’s ‘world’s first carbon neutral engine oil’ products sets a very important example in terms of demonstrating our vision,” he said.

Ayhan Köksal, Castrol Turkey, Ukraine and Central Asia Director, said: “As Castrol, when we introduced the ‘world’s first carbon neutral engine oil’ Castrol Professional Series to the lubricants market in 2014, we were the first brand in the industry to offer millions of customers the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions. With the award we received today, we take justified pride of leading the sector in the field of sustainability and being rewarded for it. Pioneering the lubricants industry with the steps we have taken in the field of sustainability is as valuable as the awards we have received.”

Certified by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development

Castrol’s carbon-neutral lubricants neutralize the carbon footprint by balancing approximately 2 kilograms of carbon dioxide for every 1 liter of lubricants used. Carbon footprint of Castrol products is evaluated according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol developed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and all of the products are certified as carbon neutral according to the BSI PAS2060 standard, which enables the measurement and management of the carbon footprint in a product life cycle.

The amount of carbon dioxide balanced with Castrol’s project every year is equal to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by approximately 4.2 million conifer trees, or by a similar calculation, the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by 320 thousand square meters of rain forest.
