Energy efficient, climate change-resistant production

Energy consumption in the industry has a cost in two dimensions: the cost of production and the impact of production on our earth. For resource efficiency in production, energy -one of the most fundamental inputs- must be consumed efficiently. For this reason, energy efficiency is a must for sustainable production. The potential for energy efficiency in production is also important for reducing energy-based greenhouse gas emission. In other words, energy efficient production means climate change-resistant production, which makes a positive impact on the earth’s future.

While realizing carbon management with energy efficiency at the facility, progress is achieved in the low carbon economy. Energy efficiency is indispensable for climate friendly production. Energy efficiency decreases costs at lubricant and grease facilities, and also reduces carbon footprint of lubricants and greases. This makes greener facilities and products.

In Turkey, Energy Efficiency Week is celebrated by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in the second week of January since 1981, while the Energy Efficiency Forum and Exhibition is held for nine years. Energy efficiency legislation is ready. The Energy Efficiency Law (2007), Energy Efficiency Strategy Document (2011-2023), the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (2017-2023; UEVEP) and the Energy Efficiency Coordination Board under the General Directorate for Renewable Energy (YEGM) are working. This year is the year of energy efficiency mobilization with the support of UEVEP, and the Energy Efficiency Forum and Exhibition will be held in 2018 spring. The 9th Energy Efficiency Forum and Exhibition will bring together the stakeholders in Lütfi Kırdar Congress and Exhibition Center on March 29-30, 2018. Energy efficiency will be on the agenda for YEGM activities throughout the year.

After that, there will be the 5th Istanbul Carbon Summit, which will be held on April 26, 2018 by the Sustainable Production and Consumption Association (SPCA), to be hosted by Istanbul Technical University. The public sector, civil society, business representatives, academia and the youth will come together at this leading platform, which will focus on “financing climate”. Following the Paris Climate Agreement and the One Planet Summit, there will be presentations by competent speakers about climate and carbon management, climate change mitigation mechanisms, climate change support and financing programs, green climate fund, green bonds, carbon trading, mandatory and voluntary carbon markets. At the “Carbon Management and Industry” session, the top executives of leading companies from different sectors will discuss the carbon management achievements of the industry and the best practices of the fight against climate. In this way, methods to reduce greenhouse gas emission, adaptation process, and the present and future of the resistance to climate change will be discussed under the titles of energy production and access to energy in our country, forest and land use, transportation, buildings, cities, industry and applications.

Candidate applications for the SPCA Low Carbon Hero Awards have started (http://www.istanbulcarbonsummit.org/en/dusuk-carbon-kahramanlari-odulu). Carbon reduction achievements will be praised, and awards will be presented at the summit. From the lubricant industry, Shell Turkey is the first and only winner of the Low Carbon Hero Awards in 2017, which are given for four years. We are waiting for new Low Carbon Heroes from our industry.
