Dow Turkey won a prize in the Effectiveness category for its “Chemistry of Teaching” project carried out in cooperation with ÖRAV. At the 2018 TİSK “Corporate Social Responsibility” awards ceremony, held with the participation of Mrs. Jülide Sarıeroğlu, Minister of Labor and Social Security, TİSK Chairman of the Board Kudret Önen made an opening speech. Dow Turkey took its place among 10 companies awarded for their social responsibility projects.
Dow Turkey launched the “Chemistry of Teaching” project in 2013 in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education and ÖRAV (Teachers Academy Foundation) as science education is one of the main elements that make innovation possible and as science literacy is not at a satisfactory level in Turkey.
İhsan Necipoğlu, Dow’s General Manager for Turkey and Central Asian Republics, indicates that they have reached 760 chemistry and science teachers in 16 provinces in Turkey through the “Chemistry of Teaching” trainings. “We helped more than 65 thousand students to love chemistry and science in 4 academic years through our teachers who attended these trainings. Between 2013 and 2017, we realized workshops in İstanbul, Bursa, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Kocaeli, Gaziantep, Trabzon, Adana, İzmir and Eskişehir with the participation of teachers from these provinces as well as other provinces in order to increase the interest of students into science,” he says.
Semra Özcan, Director General of the Teachers Academy Foundation, states that the “Chemistry of Teaching” project has played an important role in increasing the science literacy in Turkey. She noted that they are glad to be deemed worthy of an award from the Turkish Confederation of Employer Associations (TİSK).
The “Chemistry of Teaching” STEM project being carried out under the leadership of Dow Turkey is regarded as the most important social responsibility project for chemistry teachers and students. The project aims to increase the competency of students and teachers in the field of chemistry and science in Turkey. In the 21st century, the century of information and technology, it is highly important to boost success in science, chemistry, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. The project contributes to success in these areas and aims to increase Turkey’s competitive power in the near future.
