ASTM Committee Approved New Standards for EV Engine Coolants

ASTM International’s engine coolants committee (D15) approved two glycol-based standards for Fuel Cell Electric (FCEV) and Electric Vehicles (EV). In addition, the Committee is developing two standards for non-aqueous coolants for use in EVs.

The newly approved glycol-based coolant standard D8565 is for use in a FCEV where the coolant is in contact with the fuel cell stack. D8566 is for use in an EV with low electrical conductivity to minimize potential harm caused by coolant contacting the batteries.

The proposed standard, WK80854 will cover a dielectric coolant that serves as an insulator when the coolant is in direct contact with the electric components. Non-aqueous coolants described in WK87295 will accommodate new vehicle battery configurations, enabling rapid charging and extended vehicle range. “The standards will reduce range anxiety and the need for expanded charging infrastructure,” said ASTM member Allan Morrison, AMT Consulting. “They will also guide consumers in the selection of coolants when servicing their cooling systems.”

These standards will facilitate the standardization of coolant technology for vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), identify needed performance testing, and provide regulators with a minimum quality standard for product quality and labeling enforcement. They will also help guide testing laboratories to expand their analytical capacity to meet the specialized tests for these coolants.

“The electric vehicle coolants subcommittee (D15.26) invites those in the industry to help identify needed physical, chemical, and performance parameters as well as participate in the development of test methods to validate those parameters,” said Morrison.

These standards correspond with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Reduced Air Pollution), 7 (Affordable Clean Energy), and 11 (Sustainable Transport).
