What Is TBN?

TBN (Total Base Number) represents the buffering capacity of engine oil against acidic compounds. Harmful byproducts such as sulfuric and nitric acids, formed during combustion, can damage the internal surfaces of the engine. TBN serves as the oil’s first line of defense against this acidic buildup.

TBN: The Alkalinity Shield of Engine Oil

📌 The higher the TBN value, the greater the oil’s ability to neutralize acids. This property plays a critical role especially in diesel engines running on high-sulfur fuels, in extended drain intervals, and in heavy-duty applications.

💡 However, caution: A high TBN is not always beneficial. The optimal TBN level depends on engine type, fuel quality, operating conditions, and manufacturer specifications.

🔬 In laboratory analyses, a gradual decrease in TBN indicates that the oil can no longer provide sufficient protection against acids. This serves as a technical signal that an oil change is approaching.
