In cold climates, falling temperatures increase oil viscosity, hinder flow, and raise the risk of insufficient lubrication in equipment.
Under its Viscoplex® brand, Evonik Industries has developed pour point depressant (PPD) technology that controls the growth of paraffin (wax) crystals, effectively eliminating this problem.
- Thanks to smaller, uniformly dispersed crystal structures, oil retains its fluidity at low temperatures, gel formation is prevented, and reliable pumpability is ensured.
- Reliable pumpability is measured by the MRV Test (Mini Rotary Viscometer – ASTM D4684). A lower MRV value indicates better pumpability in cold conditions.
- By preventing gelation, the risk of filter blockage in cold environments is reduced, and wear during initial start-up is minimized.
- By lowering the pour point, oil maintains fluidity at low temperatures and circulates more easily.
- PPD limits viscosity increase in cold conditions. This effect is monitored using the Brookfield Viscosity Test (ASTM D2983); lower Brookfield viscosity indicates better oil flow at low temperatures.
With more than 70 years of experience, Evonik continues to deliver high-performance solutions for harsh climates through advanced testing methods, a strong global supply network, and technical expertise.
